Semantics is a strategy of intentionally using tags to provide meaningful descriptions of content on a website. When reviewed these descriptive tags provide context to help crawlers and robots understand the purpose and structure of your site. Semantic elements, while arguably unnecessary for your page to be a minimum viable functional product, are very useful for and described in easy-to-understand language. It is probably easiest to understand semantics related to non-semantic tags. Non-semantic tags such as and are used to save content but they do not provide a meaningful description of the relevance or meaning of that content. A website without semantics may have all its content contained in these two photo editing servies tags. A website that is semantic in comparison will use a variety of tags and elements to structure and organize this content appropriately. Why Semantics Matter Why You Should Care About Semantics First and foremost it makes the lives of designers and developers easier. Semantic markup makes it very easy to parse when you look at the website's code. You can find out how the website author wants the content organized and even find a helpful description of the type of content offered. Think of it like a book with an in-depth table of contents, clear chapter titles, bookmarks marking important sections, and highlighted words throughout the text; reading this book is much better than reading a book that has all the same text but no real navigation or readable formatting. Books are much easier.
